With Eugene Koonin, we wrote a rather comprehensive review on the origin, evolution and organization of the #virosphere. We describe all 10 viral realms and the logic behind them, and so much more. Check it out! comptes-rendus.academie-sciences.fr/biologies/ar...
How does a phage cocktail affect the healthy human microbiota?
We tested the Intestiphage cocktail from the Eliava Institute in a human colon model system and observed an E. coli phage bloom and minimal disruption of the microbiota.

Come and see my posters at #microbio26 A034 and A035 to hear all about my work with transposon sequencing, DNA supercoiling and location-based transcriptional potential, or come to chat about the impact of location on antimicrobial phenotype and fitness!
In raw numbers, the number of complete phage genomes from cultured isolates has doubled but the amount of unique genomes has slightly decreased- we're starting to sequence the same phages again. People are also getting better at giving their phages unique names! (Please no more phages named P1)

Really happy to have played a small part in this cool piece of work led by @guido-valverde.bsky.social and @msabrysarhan.bsky.social. We characterised S. pyogenes in a pre-Columbian Bolivian mummy (suggesting circulation before European contact) #VivaBolivianMummies

During my PhD, @milja001.bsky.social and I started counting phage genomes, and tried to make them available in useful formats with useful metadata. We also described the extent of sequenced phage genomes at the time. Five years on, we've had a look at what's changed

Its our favourite day at @microbiologysociety.org #microbio26 #genetics & #genomics. In the poster session at A039 we have our @eh-hayles.bsky.social presenting her hot off the preprint work on the dynamics of Shiga toxin subtype #stx2a in #STEC across England, 2016-2024.

✨️ Milestone complete! ✨️ I'm so excited to share my 1st ever paper with world! In collaboration with @ukhsa.bsky.social, we explored the #genomic #epidemiology of enteric fever in England & Wales from 2004-2023 🦠 with a focus on bacterial carriers within the population. Check it out in @plos.org NTD!

Author summary Enteric fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A/B, is a major global health issue. The burden of enteric fever is worsened by bacterial carriers – individual...
The human gut microbiome is a complex community that plays an important role in health, where perturbations can result in dysbiosis and disease. Bacteriophages (phages) can provide treatment for bacte...
Streptococcus pyogenes is a human pathogen responsible for a range of diseases. Here, the authors reconstruct an ancient S. pyogenes genome from a pre-Columbian Bolivian mummy, supporting that the pat...
