This could be a photo of a female mallard bathing, or taking off, but it is not.
This is a small marsh that is owned by a Horned Grebe pair.
I heard the mallard land and glanced at grebe.
Grebe submerged.
I believe this shows the exact moment that grebe bit her feets from underneath!

One of the most common birds in our marshes is the red-winged blackbird.
But there is another blackbird around and it’s raspy “yeah, yeah, yeah” call is also iconic!
This Yellow-headed Blackbird decided to fly closer, so I could really hear his call, and showed ALL the feathers!

The majority of our Pine Siskins have headed a bit north to nest in the boreal forest. But we still have a few that seem to be making themselves at home.
This Pine Siskin was hopping from branch to branch foraging, and seemed very intent on sticking the landing!

The Horned Grebe pair that rules this little marsh have eggs and they are taking turns sitting on them.
This one had just gotten relieved of nest sitting duty, and was slowly cruising around the marsh looking fabulous!

“These feets were made for walking”
Sora’s are quite common marsh birds, but they spend most of their time buried in the reeds so they aren’t often seen.
This Sora ventured out of the thick reed bed to forage and show off his amazing feet!

We are fortunate to have black terns nesting around many of our marshes. They seem to think they are swallows as they are incredible acrobats and catch bugs on the wing!
This Black Tern was zipping around over a prairie marsh catching breakfast!

And then there were two!
I waited about an hour and a half mostly staring at the reeds, and finally a Sora popped out. And then another one popped out! And then they went for a swim!
The female is in front on the left and the male is behind. More in alt text.

Spring in our prairie marshes is filled with bird drama!
Of all the ducks, the Ruddy Duck probably brings the most drama. Its display is amazing and so are its chases!
This male Ruddy Duck had decided another male was too close and needed escorting out of the area!

One of the larger and fancier wading birds. In our marshes is the avocet, but we’re starting to see a few of these long-legged waders around too!
This Black-necked Stilt was foraging in the muddy flats of a local marsh. They definitely qualify as fancy with those bright pink legs!
