when i worked for Metro i used to get emails like this all the time and it made me feel awful. and you can't be seen to criticise these celebs or their agents because they've so perfectly played the cards they've played their any backlash is seen as a deliberate attack against the greater good.
the main example i keep thinking about Jesy Nelson. she left Little Mix for "mental health reasons" but immediately launched into a solo career, then she publicly revealed the absolutely awful diagnosis of her two babies but only when an Amazon Prime documentary was ready for immediate release. 🙁
and today i saw that Danny from The Script has "opened up about his PTSD diagnosis after band mate's sudden death". i thought aw, bless him, fair play to him for talking about that. so i had a listen to the podcast he discussed it all on and it turns out the next Script album is out in August 🙃
having seen the other side of the curtain for four years (unfortunately), it's all the result of grubby agents telling their star clients that nobody's gonna give a shit about them if they don't exploit the public's sympathy. "it's trauma porn or stacking shelves love, your choice".
back in the day if a celeb had a book/album/film to plug, they'd generally just go "yeah i shagged so-and-so, the PM's a cunt, i love doing drugs" but a line has definitely been crossed since 2013-ish. nowadays celebs lean so fucking hard on mental health and self-care stuff. it's nauseating.
where's that article, the one where that Web Expert says "well since the 18+ porn ban came in we've found that porn website usage is down by 1.4 million people", and then he's asked how many people have signed up to VPNs since the 18+ porn ban came in, and he says "oh, 1.4 million".
i feel awful for feeling so cynical and jaded about it all, because she's going through hell i'm sure. but again i come back to the grubby agent who's clearly telling her "you've got to stick your disabled children in the spotlight Jesy love or it's back to working at Pizza Express - your choice".
i know the old adage is that celebs only ever reveal stories from their private lives when they've "got a book out" but i've found it especially galling and sickly in recent years because there's so much (imo) exploitation of the therapyspeak/mental health awareness age were meant to be living in.
the "accidentally became too important at work" meme but it's me and Nur posting a few leaflets for the Lib Dems before the local elections a few weeks ago and now being invited to literally every Lib Dem event in a 10-mile radius because we helped them win in our ward
