A recent study has examined whether non-native parrots in European cities compete directly with native birds or occupy ecological roles that are otherwise underrepresented in urban systems:
🌿 New paper out in npj Urban Sustainability doi.org/10.1038/s429...
🐦 Urban bird diversity is strongly shaped by fine-scale habitat structure. Grass cover, small water bodies and intermediate vegetation complexity enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services, also for future scenarios!

Thank you for joining us at the symposium at the #EOU25! Truly inspiring to see how birds support our #mentalhealth and why building #sustainablecities where #people and #birds thrive together is so important! #urban #ornithology @eounion.bsky.social
Excited to present at the #EOU25! Our new #BiologicalConservation study shows how #mountainbirds shift upslope with #climatechange and how #protectedareas are suffering from these changes. Conservation at elevation matters more than ever! 🏔️🕊️ #ornithology #conservation @eounion.bsky.social

Non-native parrot species expand the trait space of avian communities by filling empty niches in urban areas | onlinelibrary.wiley....

🐦 First Ustica Spring School was a success! Our inaugural event brought six researchers together to study #springmigration in real time, thousands of #migratorybirds passed through the island while we observed, learned, and discovered. #Ornithology at its finest in the Mediterranean!
Thanks for featuring our work! Across 6 Italian cities (220 point counts; breeding + winter), we find that established parakeets tend to expand the functional trait space of urban bird communities, consistent with filling underused niche space.
How Do Introduced Parrots Thrive In Cities?
"Are parrots competing with native bird species for essential resources or are they living in unexploited ecological spaces?"
