Distinct patterns emerged between major and minor modes and among individual modes. These patterns were consistent across visual and olfactory imagery and mirrored participants' groupings, suggesting rich multisensory associations and providing a basis for future research. 2/3
Listening to different Western musical modes evoke consistent visual and olfactory imagery beyond emotional qualities. Major modes associate with nature, daytime, happiness and floral or fresh smells, minor modes link to darker themes, including stress, sadness and damp, dusty or smoky scents. 1/3
