I got so spooked by the advice not to infodump that I didn't give readers any information at all and that didn't help either.
A corollary to my opinion that readers need exposition, actually, but they think they don't like it, and you need to coat each bit of story-critical information in something that makes it more palatable, like giving a dog a pill wrapped in cheese.

A common intermediate-level writing mistake is burying important bits of information in the story without any kind of characters reaction or other comment from the story to hint it's worth remembering.
