there's a moment early in the film of Ready Player One, where the voiceover says, "the only limit was your imagination", as the screen fills with pre-existing characters & IPs.
It would one of the most on the nose satires of modern culture if not for the fact that it's meant entirely without irony

I still think of Ready Player One as a devastating takedown of the way our culture worships brands and corporate IPs that are recycled from Boomers and Gen X with no room for new ideas, fatally undermined by the fact that the author thinks it would be cool.
