Odor intensity was not represented in a purely feedforward manner.
We observed early bottom-up communication from OB to PC, followed by top-down feedback from PC back to OB for odor intensity, not concentration.
Olfactory oscillations seems to code perception and not physical properties.

Where, exactly, does learning happen in the brain?
Out today in @nature.com, we identify a synaptic locus of birdsong learning and show that the circuit can be tuned to make birds learn faster - but at a cost. Read on👇 #neuroskyence 🧪 #prattle 💬 #bioacoustics

Participants smelled three odors presented at low or high concentrations and rated perceived intensity on every trial.
Excited to share our new paper in PLOS Biology!
We asked a simple question: when we perceive an odor as weak or strong, does oscillations in the human olfactory system represent the physical concentration of the odor, or our subjective perception of its intensity?

Oscillatory activity in the OB and PC encoded perceived intensity.
Beta- and gamma-band activity were predicted by intensity ratings, while concentration produced much weaker effects.
This suggests that perception is already reflected in the earliest stages of the human olfactory system.
OK, I'm obsessed with this study in @science.org
It took Reddit "Am I The Asshole" posts & asked LLMs if the poster was the asshole. Aaand (surprise) AI was more likely to tell people they were NOT the asshole ... even when humans said yeah YTA 🧪
