I continue to think it's a really fascinating trend that there are a bunch of British English pre-war phrases ('soccer' is one, 'movie' is another) that a lot of British people today are now convinced are Americanisms. How did that happen?

Once again, you might not like the word ‘soccer’, but it’s: a) Not an Americanism; it is a 19th century English private school abbreviation of ‘Association’ rules, much as ‘rugger’ familiarises ‘Rugby’ b) Commonplace and useful in countries where ⚽️ is not the key code of football 🇦🇺 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 etc.
