This settlement sends a clear message that municipalities cannot ignore independent oversight findings of racial bias and policy violations. It's a fundamental issue of basic constitutional freedoms.
This resolution follows the discovery of a confidential Police Commission report confirming unanimous findings that officers committed numerous policy violations and were likely motivated by implicit racial bias.
We are proud to announce the $150,000 settlement of our lawsuit against the City of Burlington on behalf of our client, J.A., a Black 14-year-old who was subjected to a violent police escalation in 2021.
