STATUS UPDATE:
Apparently a volume knob you place in-line on an audio cable is called an "Attenuator".
I still assert that technology to sove a problem is named precisely what solves your problem, or the stupidest thing you've ever heard of.
In both cases, the person you ask thinks you're stupid.
