Tarawa Atoll, Republic of Kiribati, was home to 150 stone #fishweir on its outer reef flats. Traditional stone fish traps—known locally as “te ma”. Some of the islands of the Republic of Kiribati have over 500 known species of fish and invertebrates in their waters.

Fisheries management is great at managing fisheries, but monuments protect ecosystems.
In 2015 – the last year that fishing was allowed in the Papahānaumokuākea expansion area – the Hawai‘i longline fleet caught 7,800 sharks, and discarded over 99% of them.
