Excellent, in-depth story from Penn State describing the damage to Pennsylvania fruit farms brought by this spring's temperature swings. Abnormal heat pushed the trees to bloom early, followed by a devastating frost. www.psu.edu/news/agricul...
NIH “Health Scientist Administrator” is included in the Appendix with position numbers 00526252, 00501311, and 00518788. This appears to be the title of NIH program officers (see www.usajobs.gov/job/870713500) Can anyone confirm whether this policy makes NIH program officers political appointees?
This stuff should really, really concern you. Alarming.
I don’t think this will become law but it’s worth keeping close tabs on it. When @robertkelchen.com said a few years ago he thought a Republican congress might consider getting rid of student loans altogether I thought it was nuts. Well it may be nuts but it’s a live possibility.
This is a great example of the land grant mission of higher education. And it's also why I get really nervous when warm weather comes too early.
My niece’s high school teacher discouraged her from taking AP Calc because she “asked too many questions.” Her freshman year in college, huge Calc class, she had the highest grade in the class.
In this blog post, I put together an updated dataset of how colleges have fared over the last decade on:
--Net margin
--Enrollment
--State appropriations
--Endowments
Most colleges struggled with enrollment, but appropriations and endowment were generally strong. Play around with the data!

Trump already did this in the last months of his first term and this has been a major focus of Project 2025 and Russ Vought, as @donmoyn.bsky.social has warned for years.
Don't be fooled by the smaller number. Trump 2.0 went for quality over quantity, targeting the most senior civil servants.
They are warning that, without the fast and timely release of those funds, the United States risks serious damage to the very foundations of its scientific research enterprise.
Half of surveyed Texas Tech faculty changed course content on their own after the chancellor's memos restricting teaching on race, gender, and sexuality. More than half say they're now looking for other jobs as a result of the memos. #HigherEd @chronicle.com

It's happening 🚨
House GOP representatives are about to introduce a bill that would completely eliminate subsidized student loans.
They are trying to make it impossible to go to college unless you can afford to pay for it upfront.

Roughly 8,000 career federal employees were stripped of their civil service protections Wednesday, making them effectively at-will employees.
The findings of an unscientific, faculty-conducted survey suggested that new policies on teaching about race and sex have changed university instruction.
“The Auburn University Board of Trustees on Friday gave itself complete control over course offerings, curriculum, degree requirements and academic credentials while eliminating shared governance at the Alabama land-grant university… The policy leaves many questions unanswered”

This study of four cohorts of French schoolchildren shows that the gender gap in math (girls falling behind) begins essentially immediately as soon as kids start school. They use the natural variation in kids' ages at school start to show that it's school entry, not age, that triggers the change.
Trump has published the first positions subject to Schedule P/C. Of course, I am traveling and do not have time to deal with this but hopefully I can get something on @lawfaremedia.org soon.
