And, in my humble opinion, this is one thing contributing to the teen reading decline. We made a YA market that chases adult readers/adult money instead of accepting that catering to actual teens probably won't rake in the uber bucks (with the long-term gain of fostering future adult readers)

I lay a lot at the feet of publishers being uninterested in midlist anymore, such that they’re trying to game the system for universally-appealing blockbusters or nothing. it pulls out a lot of the interesting variety in the middle.
