Borrowed the neighbor’s orchard ladder and picked more cherries, bringing the total harvest this year to a whopping 25 pounds! Shared with five neighbors. The bees and I were careful of each other, and at one point a young male Anna’s hummingbird joined me to sip juice from bursting fruit. Heaven.
Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to [blocking the raw milk fanatics] I go!
📷🧵 Last week in Maryland at the National Institute of Standards & Technology, I had a very brief chance to walk through their historical display. I can’t elaborate much on these photos but I’m a sucker for old scientific equipment & instruments.
I especially liked this display of the knotted cord techniques used by the Aztecs to record dates and numbers. Mayans used a similar technique. The human need to track and record data is timeless and takes many forms.
Mole Cubes? Yes please. Give it up for Avogadro’s number! Also, one display explained the specialized cases that were designed by NIST to house historical documents such as the Declaration of Independence.
Opened NIST time capsule from 1916, and the one that will be opened in 2051 (sealed 2001). Also, display about the nano-soccer competition where you can see the world’s smallest soccer stadium.
Old navigational instruments for seafaring, a machine invented to test the integrity of prison bars, and a plastic reference material made in space to allow perfect spheres.
We don’t think much about it, but accurate, reproducible measurements are essential for both industry and daily life. Early weights and measures.
Persecution aimed at transgender people hits a wide target, in this case all girls who want to play sports in Washington state (if this measure passes). The obsession with people’s genitals, especially kids’, is truly alarming. Notice they don’t plan to check boys’ genitals or testosterone levels!

Young female athletes in Washington schools would likely have to obtain genital exams to participate in school sports, if a controversial ballot initiative passes in November.

Transgender ballot initiative could require genital exams for WA secondary school students
So the GOP whose leader was best friends with Jeffrey Epstein, who have also refused to publish the Epstein files, whose released Jan 6 criminals keep being arrested for pedophilia, is the same GOP backing initiatives in WA to require mandatory genital inspections of children. Do you see a pattern?
