Banded General (Stratiomys potamida) - a very handsome soldier fly we found on Buxton Heath yesterday. It REALLY didn't want to fly, given the strong winds, so allowed a very close approach. @norfolknats.bsky.social @panspecieslisting.bsky.social

Reminded by me 'ol pal @flygirlnhm.bsky.social last week that BLUEBOTTLES are out there doing a heck of a lot of pollinating, particularly on ivy, including on cooler days. The last image (too lewd?) shows the female's telescope-like ovipositor all neatly tucked away. Neat.
Periodic reminder that Small-headed Flies exist and the contents def match the label on the packaging!
Also - they are spectacular! Esp Genus Eulonchus!
