..to protrude, peep out,peer, view. It's Middle English (1600's) from the OE, and thus leads to tut hills, "keep toot" and similar. Tuthill stairs in Newcastle. There are quite a few tut/tote place names nationally, look outs.
Guinevere's Guide to pronouncing Tow Law like a local. Tow rhymes with how. An interesting name. Law is a hill , Scottish & Northern. Tow is from toot/tote - an isolated conspicuous hill suitable as a look out. Tow Law is 1000ft up so it's certainly a look out place ! Toot means 🧵

My favourite. Battle of Arcot 14 Nov 1751. Clive of India leading the forces of the East India Company against the French. Arcot Hall, Cramlington. Collingwood, Nelson & Trafalgar are a class apart when counting the number of places/things named after them.
Bomarsund Aug 1854 - Bomarsund nr. Bedlington Quite a few places named Waterloo, e.g. one near Greenhead. A Dunkirk nr Chollerford Sebastopol (Crimean War) - there was (is?) a Sebastopol near Bantling Castle

Moscow in East Ayrshire as well, pronounced 'Moss Cow'. The stream running through the village is called the Volga Burn
