“Weeks after the Civil War's guns fell silent and 2 months after President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Union troops arrived in Galveston, TX…freeing enslaved people...the date they arrived — June 19, 1865 — is now remembered as the first "Juneteenth."

While some enslaved people did not know about Lincoln's order, many learned of it while the fighting was still ongoing through informal networks, rumors and sometimes from slaveholders themselves.
