Safe as Milk might be Beefheart's most accessible album. But with smart songwriting, some great vocals and typically inspired guitar from Ry Cooder, it's a lot more than just accessible. A gateway drug to his later work, like a good debut should be.

But if I had to pick just one to advocate for, it'd be this. For me, Surfer Rosa is #Pixies best album, with its own unique sound and vibe that nobody, not even they, were able to replicate. As good as debuts get.
