Please enjoy baby Alligator Gars feeding on brine shrimp (Artemia), set to a Bluey instrumental 🙂
🐟🧪gars are planktivorous at this stage (20 mm, 12 days post-hatch), but will soon switch to eating insects and fish! They’re also already breathing air!
this graduation speech moment is notable, and her amazed shock at having failed to read the room feels instructive.
when you're inside the bubble, you think everybody else is. but everybody isn't.
super super important read!!
DFO cuts are directly gutting pacific salmon research and conservation by cutting a CRUCIAL lab & associated members responsible for identifying the stressors and pathogens leading to population decline!!!

It's World Fish Migration Day, a perfect time to learn more about how more than 1,000 fish species around the world migrate to, from or within rivers to fulfill other critical life cycle needs.
See how we're reconnecting rivers with those who depend on it most, here: https://nature.ly/4dBiDF9
A little friend I met today.
I'll add only that if you're not already aware, Dr. @wbuggiii.bsky.social has been working with this lab. I'm not affiliated nor a genomics expert but the work they do is the *keystone* to resource management, restoration (that is me), & conservation per founder & now emeritus lead Dr. Kristi Miller
New research detailing high throughput sturgeon molecular tools developed by @biologyhossein.bsky.social is now live! Here we developed and tested assays across sturgeon species to evaluate impacts across a variety of pathways induced by thermal stress

Our new paper is out!
We developed a multispecies OpenArray™ chip to study cellular stress response in Acipenser species. The chip was used to measure the effects of acute thermal stress on Atlantic, lake, and shortnose sturgeon.

Ongoing DFO cuts to the Genomics Program and across the organization further compromise the capacity to conduct critical research evaluating the impacts of cumulative stressors and pathogens on salmon survival and to aid in the conservation of imperiled stocks

Turns out, if you stop tearing up the seabed, wildlife thrives:
ten years after banning bottom trawl fishing, there are 3 times the number of sea creatures + double the number of species in the South Arran MPA, Scotland, than there were before the ban 👏🦪🐟

Clean, healthy rivers not only support fish and wildlife, they can provide inexpensive, no-carbon energy, along with jobs and recreational opportunities.
Fishes experience thermal stress in their natural environment that can be caused by natural or anthropogenic factors and can directly affect their physiology. In this study, we developed a multispeci...

The genomics program opened up the ‘black box’ of wild fish research. Former and current staff say it’s been gutted.

Nearly a decade since Scotland established the South Arran Marine Protected Area and banned bottom trawling across much of it, life on the seafloor has thrived, a new study has found. Scientists surve...
