Hell, you can just look a little to the north to see a small but scrappy military power fighting off a former superpower, rather successfully.
That is probably because there's literally thousands of years of human history—most of which the civilization of Iran witnessed—showing that powerful military strikes aren't enough to obtain political goals.
Also, Belfast is technically British, not Irish. There has literally been centuries worth of acrimony over this difference. But whatever.
There's no reason why I'm migrants can't become Irish… or American… or English… or Italian… or Argentinian… or Japanese… etc.
A far better policy framework would be to passionately integrate migrants into the existing nation, understanding that their differences will make a nation more durable.
