Can't stop thinking about this now. The US is—unbelievably?—botching its sportswashing moment. We're a rich country with global sports competition infrastructure adequate to the task and somehow, we're gonna manage to use the World Cup to make ourselves look *worse*.

The actual joke in all this, right, is that sportswashing requires a pariah regime to prioritize the pageantry of the competition they're hosting—largely to hide/bury the human rights abuses (etc) that make them a pariah regime.
But the Trump administration is too incompetent for that!
