Are you interested in mountain hydrology and looking for a PhD position? If so, let's join our SnowHydro team at @sciencecharles.bsky.social in Prague and be focused on tracking snowmelt water through mountain catchments. For information on how to apply, look at: natur.cuni.cz/en/geography...
Hunting the extreme year 2022... Yes, I'm really worried about the current state of Swiss #glaciers! After a dry winter, the scorching heat of the last weeks pushes glaciers towards another black year. Hoping for some cooling but the summer has only just started @vaw-glaciology.bsky.social
The first global comparison of glacier mass change reveals a global loss of 273 billion tonnes per year, an amount equivalent to what the entire human population on Earth drinks in 30 years. 🧪
In case someone missed (and is interested), here we have the EStreams website (catalogue): estreams.eawag.ch Maybe useful for knowing where to download European streamflow data 😁
Cool to see that our HBV model software now has been used to simulate runoff on all continents 😀 tc.copernicus.org/articles/19/...
First Antarctic samples from the new Long-Term Ecological Monitoring (LTEM) program have arrived in Prague 🇦🇶 We’re proud to be part of the Czech Antarctic Research Programme together with Masaryk University and to lead LTEM, delivering key long-term data on ecosystem change. 🌍🔬
Another extreme year for European glaciers 😥. Nearly 20 meters of ice loss in the last 4 years at this place.
I am very happy to see our paper about quantifying glacier, snow, and rain contributions to streamflow in a small catchment in the Antarctic Peninsula being published in The Cryosphere: tc.copernicus.org/articles/19/...
Want do know about current status and future of rain-on-snow runoff events in central European mountain catchments? Check our new paper led by Ondřej Hotový from @sciencecharles.bsky.social at hess.copernicus.org/articles/29/.... Big thanks also to @jansei.bsky.social for great collaboration.
With already green vegetation in the mountains, it is time to look back at the past winter. It was another year in a row with poor snow conditions in Czechia. Luckily, it did not affect our Winter school of snow hydrology that we organised for @sciencecharles.bsky.social and CULS students.

Where Does the Snow Go? Tracking Snowmelt Water Through Mountain Catchments - Mountain catchments are frequently influenced by snow, which affects the seasonality of runoff. Additionally, higher ...

Where Does the Snow Go? Tracking Snowmelt Water Through Mountain Catchments
By systematically assessing data gathered by different methods, researchers refined estimates of global glacier melt and its contribution to sea level rise.

The role of snowmelt, glacier melt and rainfall in streamflow dynamics on James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula
Abstract. The frequency and intensity of rain-on-snow (RoS) events are expected to change in response to climate variations due to changes in precipitation, increases in air temperature, and subsequen...

One more year: Ice loss at Konkordiaplatz on Aletsch #Glacier is just... wow 😲 Minus 4.6 metres of ice. Will there ever be a call: "Make Aletsch Great Again"? It would be about time
