Eels in England are often associated w/ the Fens, but they were everywhere. And they were used to pay rent all over medieval England. In 1086, 3 mills in the Warwickshire village of Alveston owed the Bishop of Worcester a rent of 1,012 sticks of eels each year -- 25,300 eels. ๐Ÿ—ƒ๏ธ๐Ÿงช
