The Gnawborn have lived there for generations, safe in their burrows and winding paths, with old rules to guide them and older stories to keep them careful. Thistle Quickpaw was never very good at being careful.
Far beneath Uppsala Asylum, where the storm could no longer be seen and yet still seemed to press down through the stone, the hidden laboratory waited in darkness. The room beyond the concealed door was broader than the others, though no less crowded with the apparatus of cruelty. Glassware gleamed in the lantern light. Coils of tubing ran between jars and burners, and the air carried the mingled smells of spirits, old blood, and scorched chemicals.
