Minneapolis urbanist, St Paul enthusiast, transit nerd, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, called "an amateur historian" by Fox News. Both Cities, MN 🏳️‍🌈 Trains and train adjacent things: https://youtube.com/@vincempls

#OnThisDay June 11 1899: During the height of the bicycle boom, when tens of thousands of residents held permits to ride, St. Paul Police form a dedicated bicycle squad of 12 officers to catch "scorchers." Speed limits are set at 6 mph on sidewalks and 8 mph on streets.
#OnThisDay June 10 1929: Minneapolis YWCA celebrates the opening of its new Art Deco HQ at 1130 Nicollet Ave, now the Nicollet Mall. In 1974, during the 2nd wave of urban renewal, the building was demolished to make way for a brutalist replacement, and more parking.

When I keep saying Minneapolis has amazing hyper local creators like @wedge.live @taylordahlin.com and @daviss.org that go out into our communities doing work that mainstream media either can't, won't or is simply too lazy to do, this is exactly what I mean.
#OnThisDay June 9 1894: The SS "North West", built for James J. Hill’s Northern Steamship Company, arrives in Duluth on its maiden voyage. Designed to connect Hill's rail empire from Minnesota to Buffalo NY, the North West featured lavish Gilded Age accommodation.
What we learned today from this excellent research is that Alpha News couldn't even buy MPR lunch at Taco Bell.
Oops that's 4 years. Construction started in 1909. The parish was established by Archbishop John Ireland in 1887, and this is the 3rd church built on the site.
It was a great privilege to be invited by my @eastbankmpls.bsky.social board colleague Claire Thefaine to see her thesis defense today @cfi-umn.bsky.social. Watching young folks doing spectacular work made me feel better about the current state of science in America, if only for an hour.
#OnThisDay June 9 1912: After 5 years of construction, St. Agnes Church is dedicated in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood. Built for Austro-Hungarian and German immigrants working in the Great Northern Railway shops nearby, its grand Baroque design is modeled on Stift Schlägl in Upper Austria.
