Tl, dr: Disturbances from wildfire, bark beetles & wind will continue to increase in the coming decades. Under unabated climate change disturbances could more than double by 2100.

Yesterday, our PhDs visited the Šumava National Park, the Czech neighbor to our Bayerischer Wald NP 🇨🇿🇩🇪
Together they cover an impressive area of >900 km² fittingly dubbed "borderless wilderness" - a great reminder of the privilege of getting to do "borderless science" in a "borderless team"! 🏞️
Yippie, my paper is now out in Global Ecology and Biogeography!
Basically, we tried to destroy (simulated!) forest landscapes
And despite increasing disturbances 100-fold and decreasing regeneration by 99% - we didn't manage to! (in most cases anyways)

My favourite kind of simulation study - driven by pressing challenges in ecosystem management and executed in cooperation with the people facing them on the ground right now.

I’m really concerned about early career scientists using generative AI in writing, because writing is how we think and reflect. There’s almost nothing *more* human than that, and to give that gift away to a machine is almost unconscionable to me
Forests are reorganizing in their composition and structure in response to climate change - will they be able to maintain their carbon?
Turns out: yes - they even sequestered more carbon than resilient forests!
