During my MSc i suffered with the deepest depression and severe OCD. So bad that i got NHS in-person CBT within 2 weeks, and NHS counselling to tide me over in the meantime
(Not that they helped - looking back, i wish i knew about MCAS...)
Everyone was a bit flummoxed because i consistently got the highest or second highest mark in the class on assignments but he knew i could do better and helped me get supports and accommodations
~13 years later his impact is well remembered. I'm really glad i got to thank him properly, and he seems glad i was able to continue in research. He's now enjoying a well earned retirement 💛
My tutor checked in with me, got me a couple of extensions, ensured he was my dissertation supervisor, and was just legitimately supportive and kind. He helped me publish my first paper and gave me amazing references for PhD applications too
I have a lot of bad things to say about academia but there are some real gems in the (very shitty) system.
My MSc tutor and supervisor was one of them. We recently connected on LinkedIn and i got to thank him.
Some of these got denied because its a bit difficult to prove you're struggling whilst seemingly excelling. Studying was a bit of a vice and way to distract my mind. Nevertheless, he said he was upset the uni couldn't do more to support me 🥹
