A great afternoon at North London Collegiate School with 40 pupils tackling the Passing Through investigation.
Pupils spotted patterns, tested ideas, and refined their thinking as they worked through.
Thank you to Mr Galton for a thoroughly enjoyable visit.

For teachers:
Do any lessons you had as a pupil stick in your memory?
For me three stand out: Mrs Nicholl deriving the quadratic formula, and the painted cube and fencing area investigations.
Those investigations were memorable. More pupils deserve that experience.

Today I had the pleasure of delivering a session on problem-solving to HoDs from the Trinity Group.
Thank you to everyone for the discussion and ideas. It was a particular pleasure to finally meet @paddymacmahon.com, and old colleagues from St. George's College, Weybridge.

So much pupil attention captured (understandably) by predicted grades.
So much teacher time spent in the process.
All part of an inexact science with an enormous opportunity cost.
The failure to reform the system is a striking example of institutional timidity.

Agree or disagree?
Every state school should follow the same mathematics scheme of work in Years 7 – 9 (or possibly 10).
Going further, would you extend this to all schools?

I wrote down a random three digit integer.
I then rounded my number separately to 1, 2 and 3 significant figures.
The product of my rounded values was 2,175,000.
What was my original number?

Shameless self-promotion:
Problem-solving cannot be embedded without resources. Questions and investigations need to be mapped to the curriculum and easy to use in lessons.
