"In the Spirit" is the debut of The Holmes Brothers and shows the group as a work in progress. In particular, the instrumentation is a little too florid and often crowds out the vocals. When the vocals are allowed to shine, it is obvious why they became so beloved.

"I've Been Lonely for So Long" by Frederick Knight has the smash title track and more gems. While Knight is not an icon like many of his Stax labelmates, he's a good singer who does a solid job with this album's uneven material. The cover art is also excellent.
