There are people out there reading only the dialog in books. Not only are people going to misread you, they will innovate new ways to do so! Just make the thing and do not care for how it could be misinterpreted.
I'm sorry I don't find "You shouldn't do subtext anymore because people are stupid" to be a particularly compelling argument
