She shot him a look, unamused with what she was assuming was sarcasm. "At the cost of being treated like something less than human. At the cost of nearly all your rights as a human being. Something never rubbed me right about it."

“I thought we took broken people and made them into soldiers? I’m jealous! I’d love a lifelong room to myself. Regimented day, an isolation room whenever I want one.” He’s being deliberately annoying.

"Not every criminal is crafted from malice. Some are there because they ended up with a bad hand in life one way or another." She lifted her mug to her lips to take another swig of the drink. "Doesn't matter to me where they come from, if they're /my/ patient, I'm gonna take care of them."

“Seems like a lotta effort for no reason.” Noah shrugged his shoulders, the itching hand dropping back to his side. “Caring for people we’re throwing away the key on. What’s the point?”

"Mm. Not everyone can separate their feelings from their work, but I've managed just fine." She glanced over at the Spartan, half scanning over him. "I worked on a prison ship before I came here. Treated and cared for inmates in transport to different facilities."

“Professional detachment. Isn’t it a wonderful concept…?” Mostly finished with his drink, the Spartan holds it off to the side. Running a free hand through his hair to scratch just behind his ear. “Where’d you work before?”

"People can and do die, sometimes there's nothing you can do but make them comfortable as they die. Especially when at war." She lowered the mug, her hands wrapped around there ceramic to bask in its warmth. "Though I will say, it's been a bit more interesting here than my last place of work."

“Well…” Noah took another swig of his drink. Tilting his head slightly as he considered her words. “…at least you’re practical.”

"It's not for everyone. Some people can't handle the pressure of so many lives in their hands. I learned early on that you can't save everyone." She took another long sip from her coffee before she continued. "I do what I can, to the best of my ability."

“Better you than me.” The idea of running around all night, frantically trying to help people, the thought was enough to make him borderline nauseous.

"Usually is. I'm on call for twenty four hours tonight though. It's easier to stay awake for the entire shift." She lifts the mug to her lips and takes a good long swing of the coffee. "There's no shortage of work to be done around here, after all. I like staying busy."

“Busy shift?” Contrary to popular belief, he’s actually capable of enjoying being a nice guy. He’s glad the drink is helping Valerie out.

A coffee would be lovely, thank you. She very much appreciates the offer and takes the mug of coffee, holding onto it like a lifeline. It's warm, soothing and comfortable.

And her exhaustion can be felt a mile away, which is why he’s coming over to offer her a coffee if she wants one.

She's been pulling another all nighter. When duty calls, Valerie is one that'll be there immediately. It's not uncommon for her to stay awake for being on call.
