Huge congrats to Mar, who led this study published in @ecography.bsky.social! doi.org/10.1002/ecog... Nymphalidae butterfly diversity in the Atlantic Forest was shaped by repeated dispersal, over millions of years, from Amazonia and the Andes, rather than by high in situ diversification
Counterintuitively, we found that the thorax of the spring form heats up and cools down faster than that of the summer form :O
Spring and summer forms of the Map butterfly (Araschnia levana) differ strikingly in colour and size. Yet both forms respond similarly to external heating, revealing a complex interaction between morphology and thermal biology across seasons Congrats, Dani & the team!🦋 Link: doi.org/10.1016/j.jt...
The work will involve generating new genome assemblies and population genomic data for two rapidly diversifying genera of high-elevation specialists in the tropical Andes, Phulia and Leptophobia
The Map butterfly differs in wing size and color between seasons. We tested how these differences influence body temperature dynamics, revealing potentially optimized thermal performance between seasons. 🦋☀️ The study, led by Dani and Irča, is in preprint version: doi.org/10.64898/202...
Please share: last week to apply for a PhD position on comparative and population genomics in high elevation butterflies 🦋
New PhD position: Butterfly Evolution at High Elevations 🦋⛰️🧬 The project aims to understand the rapid evolution and adaptation of Andean white butterflies using genomics. DEADLINE: May 8, 2026 Start: Autumn 2026 (Czechia) More info: pavelmatos.wordpress.com/join-us/
More information is available in the full advertisement: pavelmatos.wordpress.com/wp-content/u...
For the past two weeks, we've hosted Paty Machado & Jessie Pereira from the University of Campinas. Together with Mar Repullés, Paty analysed genome-wide variation in Heliconius erato across the Atlantic Forest and Amazonia. Paty's visit was possible thanks to @10klepgenomes.bsky.social
Many thanks to all collaborators involved in this work! We also wrote a behind-the-paper story: pavelmatos.wordpress.com/2026/03/16/w...
