There is a LOT of attention for soil health, especially in agricultural systems, but there is very little awareness of the value of intact, undisturbed, native soils. Here, I argue that applying the old-growth concept to soils will help their protection.

Our TREE paper out on how a systems modelling approach can help to predict extreme heat impacts with some ideas on how we can move forward in implementing www.cell.com/trends/ecolo...
Almost synchronously with our new @cp-trendsecolevo.bsky.social paper on “Levelling: behaviours that constrain inequality in animal societies”, I'm also excited to advertise the first PhD student position in my Emmy Noether project @humboldtuni.bsky.social
That is for someone thrilled to explore how the balance of power is maintained in animal societies.

Out today in @cp-trendsecolevo.bsky.social our paper “Second Thoughts about First Principles in Biology.” www.cell.com/trends/ecolo... . We are in favour of first principles approaches in biology but we think that we need to do better in how we use them.
I am happy to share this new review of physiological constraints on heat adapation in #birds, recently published in @cp-trendsecolevo.bsky.social and the first major output of @erc.europa.eu project #HotLife. 🧵

Our paper about how resource variability shapes the ecology of social information is out in this issue of TREE! This eco-evolutionary lens helps explain why collective sensing has evolved across such a wide range of lifeforms, from microbes to blue whales.

First-principles approaches, based on physics or chemistry, are key pillars of biological
theory. Despite their value, there are recurrent problems with many first-principles
approaches in biology: th...
Excited to see our review out in @cp-trendsecolevo.bsky.social on the importance of mitochondrial DNA introgression for conservation! This is the first of my @formasforsk.bsky.social projects on mtDNA introgression in salmon! Big thanks to the great co-author team!
