#OTD President Carter and Soviet Leader Brezhnev signed the SALT II treaty on June 18, 1979, but it was withdrawn from Senate consideration following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Despite this, both nations honored the treaty's terms until its expiration in 1985.
