This is an incredible piece. TNC is always a terrific writer, but I think the sense of moral clarity that pervades this article — it’s laid out plain as day — sets it apart.
When people get arrested not because they did anything wrong but because their arrest is politically useful to the regime, that means you’re living in a dictatorship.
Once it becomes clear that your version of liberalism doesn't include everyone, that you are willing to sacrifice some parts of the group to save the whole, you've established that no one is safe under your rule; politics becomes a fight for survival, of obtaining safety for you and yours.

at no point in this story are a) the vandalism or b) the vandals identified - those would seem to be things you'd flesh this story out with before publishing?
