Ph.D.-student in the Behavioural Ecology group @Uni Bielefeld I'm interested in evolutionary ecology and herpetology and study personality of fire salamanders in my Ph.D.

1 year ago, the supervisor of my M.Sc. thesis, Dr. John Measey died in a traffic accient in China. A few weeks ago, we published a study with John posthumously attributed last authorship. In fact, you can see John's refelction in the toad's eye in the study's figure. Study: doi.org/10.1016/j.is...
Friends, I'm officially starting my bluesky account now in order to share owm and other's science (evolution, ecology and behavior more specifically) here! I'm leaving X (formerly Twitter) and fully migrating to bysky. Thanks to @mmoiron.bsky.social for giving me the courage to migrate.
New paper out: this is the 3rd ch. from my M.Sc.-thesis that started in 2019! How did the toxin glands as well as the composition of the toxins secreted from these glands change after an African toad invaded novel ranges and what are potential drivers of these changes? doi.org/10.1016/j.is...
Stay tuned for posts on recent preprints!
New preprint out: What kind of husbandry conditions do wild fire salamanders prefer? A question of high relevance given the spread of the deadly fungus Bsal and the need for ex-situ breeding programs. doi.org/10.32942/X2H...
I'm so happy about this paper: 1) we continued working on this project long after my thesis had officially been submitted 2) this is my contribution to the memory of my recently passed supervisor John Measey (John this one is for you!) 3) this is a great collaborative work spanning mult. countries
Are individuals with more flashy aposematic coloration bolder? We asked this question using fire salamanders! Check out our new study in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology: doi.org/10.1007/s002...
We asked if salamanders with more warning coloration are bolder and produce more toxin! Read about it in our @mmoiron.bsky.social preprint "The bright, the bold and the toxic: do coloration, personality, and toxicity represent an integrated phenotype in fire salamanders?" doi.org/10.32942/X24...
New study out: link.springer.com/article/10.1... We studied Fire Salamander colouration using data gatehred by citizen scientists. Males have a higher proportion of yellow than females: is this due to mate chaoice or differential predation threat?

Have you considered whether animals differ in their perception of density? We explored how differences in our senses, interpretation and past experiences shapes density perception, causing behavioral differences and affecting fitness outcomes. 🧪 nsojournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
