I think the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen is Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. I’d seen pictures of it a million times, but it stopped me dead when I saw it in the Uffizi. Breathtakingly, radiantly beautiful. It’s either that or Michelangelo’s Pieta in St Peter’s.
