This. And specifically the problem is nobody knows how to do melodrama any more. The crucial thing to stopping this is *you don't make your main character the protagonist*. Protagonists change and grow. That breaks melodrama serial characters.

Happened across an episode of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em earlier. Even as a kid I couldn't really enjoy it, as I just felt sorry for the people who came into contact with this moron.
