Ouch. Flood protection infrustructure is typically designed for a 1-in-50-year or 1-in-100-year flood. New study finds, “At nearly half of the 130 sites analyzed in the study, a flood expected once every 100 years in 1900 now occurs at least once per decade.” news.tulane.edu/pr/sea-level...

Useful thread. For reference, 1 gigawatt is enough to power around 750,000 homes.

One of the many ways #climate change will deliver a huge economic hit. Heat and drought are drying out the London clays, causing subsidence across wide areas. It can quietly wipe up to a quarter off a property's value, drive insurance claims to record levels, and take years to fix.
Local authorities should not, apparently, concern themselves with the big picture of increased emissions from aviation expansion contributing to climate breakdown, since this is all being taken care of. And yet...
AEF, alongside @noairportexp.bsky.social, @friends-earth.bsky.social, @wearepossible.bsky.social, and other NGOs, have drawn up what the environmental tests on Heathrow expansion should be. Here's why it matters 🧵1/7 www.aef.org.uk/2026/06/08/a...

No Airport Expansion
Aviation Environment Federation (AEF)
Just announced: OpenAI plans to lease a 9.2 gigawatt 100% fossil-fuelled data centre on Ohio. Its emissions will be between 20 - 37 MTCO2-e - somewhere between the total grid emissions of France -> Netherlands As much GHGs as 9.5 average coal plants. Will raise US total emissions by 0.5%

The real reason Mark Carney wants to build so many AI data centres? @jenstden.bsky.social and I report on internal govt documents explaining one of the top 'public policy benefits to Canada' of data centres is they 'provide markets' for gas producers. www.desmog.com/2026/06/11/m... @desmog.com
