not to be a asshole old person but i remember niantic's first game 'ingress' which everyone at the time was sure was for the purposes of collecting geospatial data, this was like 2012-2013. so rather than being shocked its better to keep "why do think this company ISNT evil?" as your default state

yes they put pikachu on your phone and pikachu is cute but the way these entire phones/platforms are constructed is and always was about surveillance and data collection. the fact that f2p games and microtransaction gambling are also bad was a buried lede
