We show asymmetry specifically at PRDM9 binding sites (~0.03% of the genome) is necessary for asynapsis, but animals vary strongly in their sensitivity to this asymmetry. We identify a locus containing Dmc1/Mei1 on chromosome 15, which genetically controls most of this sensitivity variation. 6/n
