Kent-based naturalist, with a particular affection for plants, Orthopterans, aculeates, birds. Retired after a career in conservation. I'm here for wildlife, but can't promise not to repost the occasional political piece.

From Saturday's @kentfieldclub.bsky.social trip to The Downs, Herne Bay. Nymph Lesser Marsh Grasshopper Chorthippus albomarginatus, the scarce bug Deraeocoris scutellaris, European Chinch Bug Ischnodemus sabuleti, & some of the group enjoying ice-creams (well, we were at the seaside). #KentNature
Was shown this article today on the links between natural history and the transatlantic slave trade. It was written a while back now but the case studies of early modern naturalists are fantastic! I hadn't realised James Petiver was so involved! www.science.org/content/arti...
The Kent Wildlife Conference is always busy, engaging, exciting - and this year's (on Sat 24 October) will be no different. Subjects include Nightingales, GCNs & Francis Rose's 'lost' Flora of Kent. You really don't want to miss out. Really. Full details & booking here: tinyurl.com/WildConf2026
An excellent trip, despite rainy interludes, to Hangrove bank near Downe with @kentfieldclub.bsky.social Walking in Darwin’s footsteps we saw orchids galore, grasshoppers, bugs and a highlight was seeing a small blue butterfly.

If you've enjoyed our book about Ranscombe Farm, and want to see the place & the plants face-to-face (or if you haven't got the book, but would like a copy at the bargain price of £9), then why not join the free guided walk with the author on Weds 10 June? Details & booking here tinyurl.com/yc7rtpmn
Oh, now that is SHINY! Chrysolina banksii from the garden today. #KentNature #beetles #coleoptera
Surprise new shieldbug for the garden this afternoon - Vernal Shieldbug Peribalus strictus. Not that long ago it was an exceptional rarity. #KentNature #Hemiptera #Shieldbugs
Surprised to find the chunky little jewel wasp Holopyga generosa in the garden today. It was well-behaved enough to allow me to photograph key features before I let it go again. #KentNature #hymenoptera #wasps

Lots of Short-winged Conehead (Conocephalus dorsalis) nymphs at Crag Bank NR nr Carnforth yesterday, seen during a Tanyptera Trust field meeting. C. fuscus is absent here so ID is certain. Also heard first singing Common Green Grasshopper of the year, always a red-letter day for me!
