none of these blogs made me start hurting myself. I sought them out because I was already doing it. engaging with the content was part of my self-harm loop. did it make me worse? maybe! has anyone ever developed a self-harming behavior because of these blogs? maybe!
if you find yourself thinking “ha! I’ve found the perfect group of people to point my finger at and demonize!” maybe reassess
but I don’t see any reason to treat the people causing harm as subhuman villains. they need help. they need compassion. just as much as anyone effected by the content they share
but I can tell you that pretty much all of these blogs were run by people suffering from the things they blogged about. most of them were young. and I don’t place any blame on them. people suffering share their suffering. sometimes they enable each other. sometimes the consequences are deadly
sorry for getting so dark I’m just actually so sick of people’s lack of empathy. luckily we can challenge ourselves and each other to become more compassionate any chance we get. and we should. otherwise what are we even doing

“what about pro-ana, can we shame pro-ana blogs?” look. let me share something kinda personal. when I was younger I had a serious problem with self-harm. I was also on tumblr, and followed a lot of self-harm blogs. there was tons of crossover with pro-ana tumblr
