This is fucking cool. Basically they’ve identified some discrete acoustic signatures of sperm whale vocalizations, and they argue that these represent (3?) possible phonemes, and that some variation in articulation is explained by phonology

This beautiful dialect of Slovenian has one of the most intriguing tone systems.
One pattern, low-mid vowels resisting retracted stress, is strikingly reminiscent of something we've found in whale phonology.
Tone, stress, quantity, and quality interact, which is very rare.

Two clicks were identified in sperm whales, the a-click and i-click, compared to the vowels a and i by scientists.
These clicks are grouped into codas of different lengths and patterns of pauses, for example (a-click .... a-click .... a-click a-click a-click) or (i-click i-click i-click i-click)
