Today, @ksabeelrahman.bsky.social argues that legislative primacy offers an attractive long-term vision for democracy.
To reach that goal, however, we need to use every tool available to address the underlying configurations of economic and political power that enabled the current crisis.
And much like ethnographic data, this is a rich dataset capturing many dynamics about the life course, identity, occupations and professions, historical change, organizational networks, etc. This paper is only the first to come out of this project and I'm excited to continue exploring the data.
A little peek behind the curtain: I started working on this project back in 2020 when I was stuck in my apartment! I had been planning on writing an ethnographic dissertation but quickly pivoted; this paper became my first dissertation chapter.
But even though this is "quant" I still think of it as an ethnographic project. I had to navigate institutional structures and practices to construct the dataset. I drew on prior fieldwork & familiarity with this population to validate my data and code career trajectories in commonsense ways.
