This small painting, on display at the Mauritshuis in The Hague forms a pair with a fruit still life. Together, they are unique in the oeuvre of Jan van Huysum who primarily painted large and lavish bouquets . Van Huysum's still lifes were popular – he was one of the best-paid painters of his time.
