Amnesty released a report in March outlining how host countries could save the World Cup from becoming a stage for repression and a platform for authoritarian practices.
But we don't back down.
Amnesty activists and staff will be in each host country - as we always are - monitoring and defending human rights.

The World Cup hasn’t even started...
The scenes in Belfast last night were disgraceful. Families were targeted because of their skin colour or country of origin, leaving people frightened, homeless and fearing for their safety.
The actions of one individual must never be used to stigmatise an entire community, nationality or faith.
With many immigrant communities in the USA likely to want to come together to watch the World Cup, and millions of fans travelling from all over the world, ICE and other agencies pose a chilling threat to people living in the US as well as those travelling to see a game.
But already there are reports of players and officials being mistreated.
