I increasingly think this is the role that various think tanks are trying to play in public life. They are trying to manufacture a sort of right-wing chattering class, that ignores and exists in parallel to mainstream academic consensus.

They are trying to manufacture some kind of Avignon-academy that allows them to ignore the inconvenient fact that most academics disagree with them. They can't do that without suppressing speech so that's what they're trying to do.
