The trees hold their breath. With a turn, she listens. She hears something the rest cannot: a hull breaking, people in the water. There is no way to stop it.
Sometimes seeing what is going to happen hurts more than living through it. But pain rarely changes the course of the waves.

The smell of a recently extinguished candle already clings to her skin. Tomorrow, on the shore, someone will light candles without knowing that she has been keeping vigil over them since tonight.
She is not alone.
The lighthouse turns its light, calm, still blind to what she already sees. The round, cold moon peeks out behind the expectant trees, complicit, watching without saying a word.
The bonfire embraces her with tongues that sketch a ship in distress, crossing a stormy sea.
